Planning a calm festive season for your handmade business

Gift season is coming. A few simple plans now can keep your little home business busy in the good way, with time left for family.

The end of the year is when handmade gifts shine, and it can be the busiest stretch for anyone selling what they make from home. It is also when family plans, school concerts and long summer days all want a piece of you. The good news is that most of the festive rush can be softened by a little planning in early November.

Start with a last order date

Pick the date after which you will stop taking orders for Christmas delivery, then count backwards. Think honestly about how many pieces you can make in a week, how long postage takes to reach your customers, and which days you can get to the post office. Once you know your date, share it everywhere people find you: your shop page, social posts and any emails you send. A clear deadline helps customers plan and saves you from late-night promises.

Keep the range small and steady

It is tempting to add lots of new festive designs, but a few well-chosen extras alongside your favourite pieces are easier to keep in stock. Look back at what people loved last year, if you have that to go on, and make sure you have the yarn and supplies for those first. Running short on a popular item in December is far more stressful than having a little left over in January.

Get packing ready before the rush

Small jobs add up when orders arrive. A few quiet evenings now can take care of them:

  1. Sort boxes, bags and tissue so everything is in one place.
  2. Write thank-you notes in advance.
  3. Keep a simple checklist for each order so nothing gets forgotten.

When the busy weeks come, packing becomes a quick job instead of a scramble.

Protect the time that matters

Before you plan your making, put the important family days on the calendar: birthdays, school events, holidays and rest. Then decide which evenings or mornings belong to the business, and talk it through with the people you live with. If you can share childcare or chores during the peak weeks, ask early. Saying "the shop is closed now until January" is a perfectly good business decision.

Wishing you a gentle, happy season, from all of us here at Bella Summer Rose, where every piece is still knitted by hand.
